Hi Dave and Hi Steve,
Great to see my name in print in ST+19. This 520ST with TOS1.0 and external
drive I am using to read ST+ and to write to you is only a borrowed one. My own
Atari is a 520STFM with TOS1.4, two disk drives, and 2.5Mb RAM using SIMMS in a
Zydec conversion from Evesham in the days when Evesham was on our side (I will
upgrade to 4Mb when the 2x1Mb SIMMS arrive from The Upgrade Shop). So please
don't spread the word around that I am too mean to put in the extra memory
needed to read ST+ - just wait 'til I get back to Oz next month and manage to
read your disks in one go instead of 130 or so separate files loaded one at a
time into Revenge Doc. Displayer. And for some reason RDD won't give me a
catalogue of all the files, only about 80 of them, the others just are not
there; so I have to split your ST+ folder into two folders! That's the hard way
to go, just shows how much I enjoy your mag even if your spell-checker doesn't
work.
I'm also looking forward to seeing what all those .DAJ files are about - RDD
does not understand them.
Which brings me to an unanswered question in my last note to you.
How do I get ST+ in Australia? There is not much point in sending blank disks
all that way for their return trip unless I can think of something important to
say to you. I would propose something on the lines of me paying you #1-50 or #2
per issue in advance, letting you provide an old disk for ST+ and putting the
address and stamp on a recycled envelope, let me know what you think. It is a
bit more work for you, perhaps you have an agent in Oz? On consideration,
perhaps the best immediate solution is for my father-in-law here to send you
the blank disks, label money, SSAE, etc., and he can send ST+ on to us with his
next letter.
Very frustrating for him as he will not be able to read them on this bare 520!
I don't think I will be able to persuade him to do the fiddle I do, mind you if
he is desperate he can get his 104STe repaired.
I shall experiment with Steve's solution to the problems of using a Zip drive
on the ST when I get home, and will let you know how it turns out.
I spoke to HiSoft, they still sell the Zip kit for #170 plus #70 for ICD Link,
but I am reluctant to pay your Government the VAT when I will be carrying the
Zip out of the EU. So I have ordered a Link from TUS and will find a SCSI Zip
tax-free somewhere. But I would then miss out on Zip Tools from HiSoft -
whatever they are - somebody will tell me I'm sure.

ST+ replies:
Hiya John,
it's great to hear from you again, I'm really looking forward to your
views when you finally get to see ST+ in all it's 1Mb+ glory, I'm sure that
you'll be completely amazed with what we've achieved. You never know, you might
even forget to worry about the odd spelling mistake we make ;))
The .DAJ files you reffer to are MEDIUM REZ PICTURES, these pictures are
displayed in and amongst the text files [notice the odd <picshow>?? command
from time to time?] in a similar manner to HTML. As far as I know ST+ is the
ONLY diskmagazine in the WORLD to use picturs within text.
Now then, once you arrive in australia things will become a little hader to
obtain ST+....or will it, I can guarentee we've got a worldwide distribution
however, if your not on-line things can get a little more difficult.
The best thing to do here is for you to either visit a CYBER CAFE in Australia
and download ST+ via our WWW site (I'm sure if you talk to the manager of the
cafe he'll talk you through it and help you along) or alternatively simply do
as you have been doing and write in, I know airmail can take a while but I'll
be sure to send you ST+ in the best possible packaging. To be honest I've had
little experiance with oversea's mail, most of my worldly conversation has
taken place via the Nest echo's at All At Sea BBS. One way or the other we'll
get ST+ to you, perhaps if all goes well mail wise you could become ST+'s
official australian distributor?...
If you like you could always experiment first before you leave us, why not
send a friend or relative in Oz a disk, ask them to return it right away and
see what condition it arrives back in, if all goes well we'll see if sending
ST+ via airmail is a viable idea.
We wish you all the best with your ZIP drive, please do write in and let us
know how you get on, incidentally, last month I believe you enquired about
using a flatbed scanner on an ST, well, I'm happy to inform you I was wrong,
you can indeed ue a flatbed scanner with an STe, a hard drive and as much
memory as possible helps and it can be a tad expensive however...it IS as I
said possible [I'll blame Pete augustin coz he initialy said it wasn't to me in
the first place hehehehe :))].
Hear from you soon, John.....Dave...
